Footprints on Sand
The footprints began at the waterline and walked inland, then reconsidered and returned. Whoever made them had changed their mind about leaving.
I walked beside them, matching my stride to theirs. For a while there were two people where there had been one, and the beach felt less empty.
By evening the tide had erased both sets. The sand was smooth again, but I knew something had happened there. Some evidence is only temporary.
